Genghis Blues follows the travel of American blues guitarist Paul Pena to a remote area of Mongolia called Tuva. Paul is fasincated with Tuvan throatsinging and he taught himself the ancient technique that’s unique to the Tuvan people. In Genghis Blues he travels to Tuva to compete in the annual throatsinging competion, making many new friends along way. It’s a touching story that highlights the power of music in bringing people together – as cheesey as that may sound, it’s true in Genghis Blues! There’s also a comment on the difference between American and Tuvan societies. Paul, who is blind and suffers from depression, often struggles with his very existence as a citizen of San Francisco. In Tuva, he is welcomed by the warm embrace of the people.
