Should CRTC programming regualtions apply to content that’s delivered online? Representatives from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (led by Actor Colin Mochrie) argue that Canadian content is getting burried under foreign content as more and more people turn away from traditional broadcast mediums in favor of online access to entertainment. The group is pushing for a levy to be added at the ISP level that would in turn be used to fund Canadian entertainment projects. Personally, I will not even being to entertain the idea of mass ‘filtered’ internet content but I do like that there’s some forward thinking going on here. Because of the wild-west nature of the web I’m just not convinced that there could be an effective monitoring and regulation system set-up to ensure that desimination of Canadian content continues (in the way that it works to radio and TV regualtion). Leaving the ‘pipes’ open while continuing to fund and support Canadian Content is the way to go. It would be a shame to have this exercise turn into nothing more than a mass money grab. If it’s planned correctly and implemented effectively I will be behind this idea – the proof is in the perverbial pudding.
